Hello Pastor Ardi!
Greetings! Im Irene and Im really wondering why are jewelry banned from the Adventist life? Why do adventist abstain from wearing any form of jewelry? I’ve asked some fellow adventists about that and here are the common answers:
1. Jewelry are expensive and advenstists are advocates of simplicity.
2. Its pagan practice.
3. Piercing is prohibited from the Bible thus we do away the earings
4. Paul said something in the Bible about “braided hair and jewelry”.
5. The Jewelry issue is exclusively for the Philippines
Here is my counter reaction:
1.Sure adventists are advocates of simplicity but “simplicity” is relative to time and fashion. a plain white bracelet is simple, a plain chain necklace is simple, a sea shell necklace is simple and you can even make one for your self. in the case of being expensive: there are a vast aray of cheap but beautiful reproductions of jewelry that would not cost you an arm to buy.
2. I’ve heard its pagan practice but i dont see any thing that would be a conflict with my relationship to God. i dont see anything dogmatic about wearing jewelry. its not like The State of the Dead or the Second Comming. As I remember, Abraham gave gifts of jewelry to Rebecca. I dont think that God would fry me to death with a bolt of lightning if He caught me wearing a sea shell neck lace, would He? By the way, i cant find “Thou shalt NOT wear Jewelry” in the ten commandments.
3. Piercing is bad… I agree with that but there are clip-on earings and magnetic earings. how about necklaces and bracelets and rings? you dont need to drill a whole to put those on right?
4. Yeah apostle Paul said something about braided hair and jewelry but he said that in reference on how to dress properly in the church. In short, Paul was teaching the people how to be moderate and simple, not totally banning ornaments. And as I said, simplicity is relative to time, fashion and culture. A plain white bangle is considered a simple piece and so is a sea shell earing.
5. I’ve seen adventist from other countries wearing jewelry, specially those from US. are we in some sort of double standard here? is the Jewelry issue only relative to one’s culture and country? In the muslim culture, a display of coins on the veil signifies the social standing of a woman. should that jewelry issue trumple on the long-practiced culture of the muslim (given for example that Im a muslim convert and would still like to retain the muslim fashion)?
I know for one that a person can live without jewelry because i do live without them but the Adventist institutions give too much emphasis and restrictions resulting to penalty when one one is found wearing ornaments. (Try being a college student in AUP and go to class wearing a clip-on earing. The Student Discipline Officer will go berserk over that matter) I kindda see that funny and insane.
Thanks Pastor Ardi for taking the time to read this and thank you in advance for answering my questions. May God continually bless you, your family and your ministry.
Yours truly,
Irene
